AN ACT in relatior to runaway slyes in this state.
In consequence of the difficulties attending the
recovery of runaway slaves, in this state, arising
from their being detained for months in prisons at
a distance from the domicil of their masters, or
from the slaves' changihg their names or conceal-
ing those of their masters, therefore,

of such runaway slaves, as may have been detain.

ter the public advertisements which shall be made
hereafter in the French and English languages, in
the gazette published in New Orleans by the state
printer, and in the newspaper nearest the place
where the said slave or slaves may have been ap.

When runa- Sec. 2. And be it further enacted. That whenever

shall be sent a runaway slave shall not have been claimed by

above fixed, the said slave shall be sent by the she-
riff of the parish in which he may be detained, to
the sheriff or keeper of one of the aforesaid pri-
sons or depots, nearest the residence of the owner
of said slave or slaves, if known; or if unknown, to
the depot nearest the parish jail where said slave
may have been apprehended: and that the sheriff
shall receive for his mileage going to and returning
from the said depot, six cents and a quarter per
mile: a fee bill of which expenses shall be deposit.
