AN ACT to amend an act entitled, An act pointing out the manner of obtainint
Residewe within this State.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the senate and House of RepresentatweR
of the state of Louisiana in genera! avsenbly ,iv n , That any
alien c6ming into this tate fr( in a fo eign country. or from any
state of the United States, or any citizen of he U tited States Co-
ming into this state as aforesaid, shall, after having resided one
year without any interruption in one of the parishes of this state,
having in ihe- meantime purchaied or rented a h use or room, or
parcil of land, or pur<ued some professi n ot employment for a
support be coumidered a having acquired a residence in the parish
W'here such individual has so resided and complied with the above
requisitions, by making proof of the same before any j .dge or
justice of the peace within this state, *ho is hereby authorized and
required to recei.e mch evidence and ma.ke it a part of the record
of his court, and to gi ant to the individual an attested certificate
to that effect; and the oath of the individual applying, supported
by the evidence of another, shall be eteemeAsufficient proof.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That no alien shall be consi-
dered as having acquired all the rights of a citizen of this state,
and enjoy the right of suffrage, until in addition to the requisitions
contained in the foregoing ection, thev shall have acquired a natu-
ralization under the laws of the United States, and become a na-
turalized citizen of the Uited States ; provided however, that
this shall not be required of any individual who was a resident of
this state at the time of the adoption of the constitution of this state.
Sec. 3. And be it further en ated, That sesidence once acquir-
ed shall not be forfeited by absence on the business of this state or
of the United States, but a voluntary absence from the state of
two years. or the acquisition of residence in any other state of this
union or elsewhere, h.ll fo feit a resideice within this state ; pro.
vided, that nothing herein contained shill free or excuse from mi-
litia service auy person who,.by the laws in f6rce in this state, is
liable thereto.
Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, That this law shall be in force
from und af.er the passage hereof ; and all acts or part of acts con-
trahy to the irtent and meaaing of this act be, and the same are
'hereby repealed.               [Approved Alarch 16, 1818.]

of the State of Louisiana in general assembly convened, That within
twenty days after the first Monday of January in each year, the
governor shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent
of the schate, appoint the administrators of the charity hospital of
