CHAPTER II.
AN ACT
To provide for the deliver-y qffitgitive Slaves to their
owncrs, inhabitantsof the 5panish Provinces adjacent
to the Territory of Orleans.
Sect. 1st. Be it enacted by the Legislative Council. and
House of Representatives of' the Territory of Orl'ans
in General Assembly convened, That the judges of the
Superior Court of this Territory, the Parish judges
and justices of the Pence shall be and are hereby autho-
rised respectively to hear the complaint of persons re-
siding within the limits of the Spanish Provinces adja-
cent to this Territory, their agents or representatives
claiming and demanding thc right of ownership of any
slave or slaves, who may have fled from the provinces
aforesaid, and of this, due proof being made, it shall be
the duty of the said Judge or Justice of the Peace
forthwith to direct and order the delivery of said slave
or slaves to the owner thereof, his agent or represen-
tative.
Sect. 2d. And be it further cnacted, That the costs
and charges for the apprehension, safe keeping or deli-
