An Act to amend the third section of an Act entitled an Act to repeal an Act en-
titled an Act to extend the civil jurisdiction of the Justices of the Peace in the
city of Savannah, and to compel Justices of the Peice and Constables of the
country districts in the county of Chatham to be residents of the districts of
which they are elected, assented to 21st December, 1835, so far as the civil ju-
risdiction of the Justices of the Peace for the first, second, third and fourth dis.
tricts, Georgia Militia, in the city of Savannah, are concerned, assented to 17th
February, 1854,f and also to amend an Act to regulate the trials of slares and
free persons of color within the limits of the city of Savannah, assented to 171h
December, 1847,t and also an Act~to give the Magistrates within the corporate
limits of the city of Savannah, the right to hold their Courts more than one day
in each term.
4. Section 1. Be it enacted, That from and after the passage of 3dsee.fatt
this Act, the third section of the above recited Act shall be altered 64b, 17t
and amended as follows, to-wit: the Justices of the Peace shall be ded
allowed, in all cases, for drawing a jury and making out the venirijg'feb
$1 00; for every witness subpoena, 314 cents; for issuing notices to inchatham
Magistrates or for taking examination of defendants, prisoners or
witneses, each, 50 cents; for every order to bring up a prisoner or
to discharge one from jail, 621 cents; Constables for taking a pris- eotab'
oner to jail, under civil process, $1 25.
5. Sec. II. Be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That Talesmen
on the trial of a slave ir person of color, where there is not a suf- a, t
ficient number of jurors of the original panel present, the Constable,
by direction of the Justice, shall fill and complete such jury by tales-
men, provided there shall be not less than three of the original pan-
el on such jury.
6. Sec. III. Be it further enacted by the authority of the same,jumtire may
hold court
That it shall and may be lawful for the Magistrates, ivithin the cor- more than 1
porate limits of the city of Savannah, to hold their Courts more than Y h,
one day in each term, in case their business is such as to require it.
