manner of collecting such tax, and to pass all laws and ordinances By-laws;
that they may deem necessary and proper for the good government
of said town and which will secure the peace and promote the com-
fort, health, and prosperity and happiness of the inhabitants of said
town, the same not being repugnant to the constitution of this State,
and of the United States.
4. Sec. IV. Said corporate authorities shall have power to levy
such tax as may be necessary for the support of the government ofram-
said town and other purposes upon the real and personal estate
within the corporate limits of said town, and also such poll tax as
they may deem just and right.
5. Sec. V. Any two of the commissioners of said town may at
any time hold a police court for the trial of offenders against the PoliceCourt;
laws and ordinances of said town, and may punish by fine or im-
prisonment the fine not to exceed one hundred dollars, and the in-
prisonment not to exceed ten days.
6. Sec. VI. The commissioneis shall have the power of Jus-
tices of the Peace within the corporate limits of said town and bind ex-omelo
over to the Superior Court all persons guilty of offences within the'usices, &C.
corporate limits of said town, or for want of bail commit them to
jail.

An Act to confer certain additional powers upon the Mayor of the city
of Savanuah and to authorize the Mayor and Aldermen of said city
to pass ordinancesfor the more effectual suppression of certain ofcnces
concerning slaves, within the limits of said city, and to pro-
vide for the taking of testimony in certain criminal causes triable at
special terms of the City Court of Savannah, also to amend an act en-
titled  an act to alter the time for the election of the Mayor and
Aldermen of the city of Savannah, to reduce the number of Aldermen,
to make the Mayor elective by the people, and to prescribe his duties,
and to provide for the election of certain officers therein named, as-
sented to December 25th, 1843 ; and also to amend an act entitled
 an act to amend an act entitled an act amendatory of, and in ad-
dition to the va? ious acts heretofore passed in reference to the city of
Savannah, approved, December 8th, 1849, to allow an appeal to a
special jury in the Superior Court of Chatham county from any de-
cision made under the sixth section of that act, and also provide for
the registry of the names of all persons entitled to vote for Mayor and
Aldermen of said city, and to prevent persons from voting for such
