Sec. 1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre-
sentatives of the State of Georgia, in General Assembly met,
and it is hereby enacted by the autheirity of the same, That
from and immediately after the passage of this act, it shall
be lawful for all owners of male slaves on the Island of
St. Catharine, either to perform ioad dutyin conformity to
the laws now in force, or to commute for the performance of
such duty, by paying for each male slave liable to work on
the public roads the sum of three dollars per annum.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the owners or ma-,
nagers of such slaves shall be summoned in the manner
pointed out by the law regulating roads in the county of
Liberty, and on refusing to deliver to the person summoning
a list of such slaves, or neglecting to perform the duty en-
joined, or to commute for their labor, shall be subjected to
all the pains and penalties which the existing road laws inflict.
Sec. 3. And be it furihr enacted, That all fines which
may be incurred under this act, shall be paid into the bands
of the Commissioners of the road district where the labor of
such slave may be apportioned, to be by them applied to the
use of such road district-any law to the contrary notwith-
standing.
