AN ACT
-Toexempt fou road duty, on certain conditions, all mate slaves on
the island.of St. Catharine.
WuienisAq, all male slaves on the Island of St. Catharine are reo
4916red to perform road duty on the main . And whrreas, by such re
quisition they are not only subjected to much inconvenience, but eas
posed to great hazard.
9 1. Be it therefore enacted by the Senate and House of Representativap
oI the State of 'eor-ia, in General .Assembln met, and it is hereby ei
aeby the authority f the same, Tha, from and immediately after the
p,1,ing of this act, it shall be lawful for all owners of male slaves on
the Ibland of St. Catharine, either to perform road duty in conformi
ty to the laws now in force, or to commute for the performance of anc
duty, by paying for each irale slave liable to work on the public roads
the sum of three dollars per annum.
§ 2 And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That the
owners or nianagers of such slaves, shall be summoned in the manner
pointed out by the law regulating roads in the County of Liberty, and
on refusing to deliver to the person summoning alist of such slaves,
or neglecting to perform the duty enjoined, or to commute for their
labor, shall be subjected to all the pains and penalties which the ex.
isting road laws nlict And be it further enacted, that all fine*
wvhich may be incurred under this act, shall be paid into the hands of
the Commissionfrs of the road district where the labor of such sinves
may be apportioned. to be by then applied to the use of such road
district; any law to the contrary notwithstanding.

1WuzrAs, at May term, 1821, of the Superior Court of Ilichmons)
County, judgment was entered up against the said Thomas Crawford,
for the sum of five thousand dollars upon a recognizance entered into
by said Thomas Crawford, for the faithful appearance of Benjoig
.Crawford before said court, to answer to the charge of forgery.
