[No. 53.1              AN ACT
To incorporate the La Fayette Mechanics' Literary and Benev-
olent Association.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Iqep-
rescnlatives of the Sla/c of .dlabama in General dsscnibly
Corporate  convened, That James II. Foreman, William J. Adams, John S.
ityle.    Pratli, Thomas Stewart, and their associates and successors,
be, and they arc hereby declared a body politic and corporate,
under the name and style of the La Fayette Mechanics' Lit-
erary and Honevolent Association.
Powers.     Sec. 2. A4nd he it further enacted, That said body politic
and corporate, shall have power to adopt such a constitution
and by-laws as iay seein to them to be fit, not inconsistent
with the the Constitution and laws of this State.
Sec :i. .And be it further en ac/ed, That said body politic
Fnrther Pow-and corporate, by their corporate name, shall have power to
me and be sued. to contract and be contracted with, to acqire
and hold property and dispose of the same: Provided, That
said real estate, or any other property held by said corpor*-
tion, shall be held and used exclusively for literary and benev-
loont purposes.

To Incorporate the Town of Girard, in the County of Russell.
Section 1. He it enacted by the Senate and Hlouse qf 1pp.

convened, That the corporate limits of the Town of Girard,
Limits.   in the County of Russell, shall extend a half mile each way,
from the eontre of said town, and be designated and known as
the Town of Girard, and the inhabitants residing withitn the
limits of said town, as hereby established, shall be, and they are
lereby ereated a hody politic and corporate. and who shall on
first Motday in February next, and on tihe first Monlay in
Februairy in each and every year Itiereatler, elect by hallot an
ltte innt and  five  Councillors, residents, house or lanrl holders,
who shall be designated and known by the name an(] style of the
Corporiae
n1me and    aLendant and Council of the Town of Girard,' and by
ptyle.    their samte corporate name and style, they and their successors

law it ini equity ; and may purchase, have, hold, recive, enjoy
and retain in peipetuity, or for a term of years, any estate, real
