Svc. 1. Be i enacted by the Senate and Ilouseof Represes*
thtives of the State of A1abamna-in General #ssentbly convened,
That the inhabitants of the town of At hens in Limestone cour-. nO
ty shall be and continue a body politic and corporate by the Athes
name of the Mayor and. Aldermen of Athens; and by that styl
iamemay purchase, receive, hold or let, sell, grant, alien or as-
sure prollerty, real and personal, and sue and be sued and do
any othei act as a natural person, and may have aseal, which
may be changed at pleasure.
SEc. 2. JaAs be it further enaeld, That the present limits
of said town be.continued, and that hereafter the corporatel
jurisdiction rights privileges dities and restrictions he:eby
friven or herein contained shall arise exist and extend in and
over-the present limits of said town.

shall coisist of a Mayor, and Aldermen, or seven members, be electedr
who, in the first instance, sholl be elected on the first Monday
in March next, andannually thereafter on the first Monday
in Janua, by ballot, by the free white male citizens within Qnalifleli
the aforiesaid limits of the age of twenty-one yeara, who shall voterRay
be freeholders or house-holders therein, or who shall have re-
side&therein six months preceding and paid a corporate taX
for the preceding year, as prescribed by this act or an ordl-
riance of tl corporation, or who shall be the legal or equitable
owners in good faith of real pi perty within said limits, such Electionb
election shall be held by the Sheriff of said county and three whom bel
freeholders to be by him sumnied as Judges, and he shall
conduct the same in the manner of an election for members of
the General Assembly, he giving the casting vote if any two
or more shall have an equal number of votbs ; and the seven
persons having the highest numixber of votes shall be Aldermen
until the next annual election for Aldermen and until their To take
successors shall bo qualified, and sai4 Sheiff shall give to oath.

present their certifiicates to the Judge or Clerk of the county
court of said county, and before him take the oaths prescribed
for civil officors of tho Statq and an oath to perform the duties
on them imposed by this act without fovor or partiality, of
which qualihicatiQn a record shall be niade in the office of said AldemenL to

ballot one of their number to be Mayor during their termof
service; who shall before the said Judge or Clerk take an ad-
