INTRODUCTION
The Bureau of Biological Survey this year presents this publication, its thirty-
first annual summary of the game laws, to meet the needs of law-enforcement
officials, cooperators, and sportsmen generally by supplying information as to
open seasons, hunting licenses, bag and possession limits, and interstate trans-
portation of game. In the interests of economy in printing expenditures, made
necessary by reduced appropriations, many of the details formerly included are
ocitted. Information not appearing herein may be obtained by communicating
with appropriate State game officials, whose addresses are given on page 34.
FEDERAL LEGISLATION
An act of Congress approved July 14, 1932, makes it unlawful to hunt, pursue,
or needlessly distgrb any-41d ducks, wild geese, or other waterfowl in any of the
waters of the District p Columbia. This, in effect, converts the entire District
into a game sanctuary.
Amendments to the Federal regulations under the migratory bird treaty act,
approved and proclaimed by the President on July 20, 1932, provide for an open
season on wild ducks, wild geese, brant, and coot (with some exceptions) of 60
days throughout the country. This action was taken following an investigation
of the nesting and feeding conditions on the great breeding grounds of the North
Central States and the Prairie Provinces of Canada, which disclosed a material
improvement over the conditions that last season made it necessary to limit to
one month the shooting of these species. Notwithstanding the general improve-
ment noted, however, it was found that certain species had not increased in num-
bers to the extent others had. It therefore became necessary to close the season
entirely on ruddy ducks and buffleheads and to reduce the daily bag and possession
limits on canvasbacks, redheads, greater and lesser scaup ducks, ring-necked
ducks, shovellers, gadwalls, and blue-winged, green-winged, and cinnamon teals.
At the same time it was found that eider ducks had increased in numbers suf-
ciently to justify an open season on them, with a limited bag.
