Re: Brucellosis Control
Gentlemen:
We have been handed survey and recommendations of tho
tuberculosis division of the Department of Public Health dated
December 31, 1947, with a request for the opinion of this office
concerilng 'the legality of the proposed procedure for the con-
trol of brucellosis in Arizona. We note that that department
has requested that the Board proceed as follows:
* * * that the Board, in accordance with the
statutory provisions direct the State Vetori-
narian to:
1. Test all cattle producing milk in the
State, for the presence of Brucollosis
and identify all reactors.
2. Notify the Board and the owner of all
cattle so infected.
3. Quarantine. all dairy herds in the State
and release for sale and shipment (other
than slaughter) only if such cattle
shall have been properly tested and prov-
en.. agativc or comply with State Liv-
stock Sanitary Board Regulations on
Brucellosis. Animals that shall show
positive reaction may be released for
sale only into herds where such milk
shall be pastourized. The determihat ion
whether the pasteurization is satisfac-
tory or not shall be made by joint-ap-
prova1 of the Dairy Commission and this
department.
4. To make the sale of raw milk permissible
only upon certification that the cattle
are free of Brucellosis or have been
vaccinated as a calf against Brucellosis,
in a manner prescribed by the State
Veterinarian.
