ONE MORE APPEAL
TO PROFESSORS OF RELIGION, MINISTERS, AND CHURCIIES,
WHO ARE NOT ENLISTED IN THE STRUGGLE
AGAINST SLAVERY.
BY WILLIAM GOODELL, ESQ., N. Y.
You profess to be Christians -created anew in Christ Jesus unto
good works; set for the defence of the gospel; the salt of the earth
and light of the world. Yours is a good profession, a high calling,
an exalted position. Your power of doing good or of doing evil is
the most mighty power in the nation, the most potent wielded by
men upon earth; and your responsibilities are in proportion to your
powers. Whoever refuses or neglects to examine great questions of'
Christian morality and duty, you may not innocently or safely neglect
or refuse. Whoever may be excused from action, where the destiny
of souls and the glory of God are concerned, you, most assuredly, can-
not be excused. Whoever may listen to the suggestions of carnal
ease, worldly policy, or ambition, you may not thus listen. Whoever
may clove their eyes upon surrounding abominations, and the dangers
of the church, or their ears to the cry of the poor, you certainly can
have no excuse fbr closing. ours.
THE CASE STATED. - Come, then; consider the oppressions and
abominations that are done in this land of Bibles and sanctuaries, of
churches and Sabbaths! Hear the cry of nearly three millions of your
countrymen, including about two hundred thousand members of churches
of your own sects. Run over the catalogue of their wrongs. See them
chattelized - reduced to the condition of things, reputed and adjudged
in law to be brute beasts ; - denied the prerogatives of men; forbidden
to hold property, or to contract marriage; herded together like swine ;
denied the sanctities of the family relation; torn from each other and
sold, without regard to the ties which bind husband and wife, parent
and child; denied the means of education; forbidden to read the Bible,
or assemble freely to worship according to the dictates of their con-
sciences, with none to molest or make afraid; driven to unrequited
labor with the lash; existing, not for themselves, but as the append-
ages of others; degraded, crusheo defenceless, utterly unprotected
by law, at the mercy of their oppressors, entirely subject to the will
