Mr. CuLmoM presented the following
PAPERS RELATING TO THE PROGRESS AND CONDITION OF THE
BUSINESS BEFORE THE SPANISH TREATY CLAIMS COMMISSION.

Letter, Commission to the President, dated August 1, 1906, asking
extension of time for doing its work-Progress of business from
April 1 to August 1, 1906.
SPANISH TREATY CLAIMS COMMISSION,
August 1, 1906.
To the PRESIDENT.
SIR: I have the honor to submit to you herewith a draft of an
Executive order extending for six months from September 2, 1906
the powers and jurisdiction of this Commission. The extension of
the time for the work of the Commission is required by the public
interest.
On April 7, 1906, the Commission transmitted to you a statement
of the progress and condition of its business. This was sent by you
to Congress m a message of April 9, and was printed as Senate
Document No. 308, Fifty-ninth Congress, first session. A copy is
inclosed. In that statement it appears, under heading No. VIII,
that of the 542 claims originally brought before the Commission 221
have been disposed of, and the situation of the 321 remaining cases
is disclosed, as well as the efforts of the Commission and of the
Assistant Attorney-General to expedite the business. There is now
submitted a table on the following page, in two columns, restating
the condition of the 321 cases on April 1 and stating the condition on
July 31, 1906.
