authoied numerous magazines and two

THE WBA HONORS SENIOR WOMEN IN GOVERNMENT


  On Novnibei 6, 1997, the M A hosted its Triennial Recep-
tion Honoring Senior Women Attorneys in Government at
The Club at Franklin Square. Senior women attorneys fri every
scetor of the federal government were recognized for their distin-
guished leader ship and public service
  The evening commenced wIth a panel introduced by WBA
Board Membr Kathy Ellis. The panel discussion, moderated by
Mary Elcano, Vice Presideiit and Geieral Counsel, U.S. Postal

Service, featured Norma \. Cantu, Assistant Secretary for the
Ofice o1 Civil Rights, .. Department of Education, Geraldine
R. Gennet, Geneial Counsel, U.S. House of Representatives, Lois
J. Schiffer, Assisam Attorney General for Environment and Nat-
ural Resources, . .S. Department of Justice, and Emily Clark
Hewitt, General (ounsel, I.S. General Services Administration.
  The speakers described the varied career paths which led
them to their current positions. Gennet, who as General Counsel
for the U.S. House ot Representatives represents its members in
legal matters arising rom their official duties, indicated that she
applied for her position based on the encouragement of a past
WBA President. Cantu, who previously worked for the Mexican
American Legal iefense and Education Fund, stated that she is
a proud product of affirmative action. Cantu noted the
increase in the n e    ofw e holding high level positions
during the Clinton administration She added that she is
convinced that we will have equal opportunity and says it is her
