JANUARY SHOWCASE PROGRAM TO
          DISCUSS PROBLEMS OF
CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY,~ EMOTIONAL
   DISTRESS IN LEGAL PROFLSSION
   We all know someone like Jenny...bright articulate,
competent. But lately, Jenny has been missing importnt
appointments, requesting last-minute delays of hearings,
snapping at co-workers, nodding off in meetings, unable t
focus on even the simplest of legal sues, and appcarng
rambling and unprepared for her presentation to a major
client. If Jenny continues in her pattern of erratic behavior.
she will likely ruin both her professional and personal
life.
   The problems faced by Jenny and other attorneys ard
professionals like her will be the topic of the Januar
Women's Bar Association Showcase Program, Ineffective
Assistance of Counsel: Chemical Dependency     and
Emotional Distress in the Legal Profession The program
is being presented in association with the Bar Association of
the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia Bar, the
Washington Bar Association, the Hispanic Bar, and the
National Association of Women Accountants.
   The Showcase Program will be a panel discussion
featuring professionals who evaluate and piovide assistance
for attorneys and other professionals sullern g from
alcoholism, drug abuse depression, stress, and related
illnesses, Panel menbers wl1 be: from the District of
Columbia Bar, Thomas E, Acey, Jr, Chairnan of the
Lawyer Counselling Committee, and Susann Makepeace,
counselor specialized in treating chemical dependency and
Director of the Lawyer Counselling Program, from Circle
Treatment Center, which provides outpaticnt piograms for
alcoholism and chemical deperdency Rosalind Go dfarb,
Ph.D., certifred drug addition arnd alcoooi sm czounselor,
and James L. Evans, M.D., board certified psychiatrist,
Don Phillips, President of Cope, Inc., a provider of
employee assistance program services to private and public
employers in the District of Columbia metropolitan area,
and a member of the lega profession who is currently
recovering from a chemical dependency Panel members
1will be discussing the factors that can lead to chemical
dependency and emotional stress in attorneys with D
Goldfarb stressing those factors which are particularly pro-
blematic for wonen. There will also be a discussion of the
physical impact of chemical dependerncy and emotional dis-


tress, ways in which attorneys can seek assistance, and a dis-
cussion of employee assistance programs which employers
may consider instituting for their troubled employees.
    One such pgram, the Lawyer Counselling Program of
th   District of Columbia Bar, haded by    Susann
Makepeace, and established in 1985, provides assistance
for attorneys and judges who are suffering from any and all
types of problems which interfere with their performance or
personal life. Thc program provides an initial assessment of
the individual's problem, determines the proper course of
trcatment and refers the attorney to an appropriate program.
IThe attorney will also be assigned two lawyer volunteers,
who have been through similar treatment, to serve as men-
tors during the recovery, period, and will be monitored
throughout h s or her rccovery.
   Acey, Ch airman of the Lawyer Counselling Committee,
which cstablisbed the counselling program of the D.C. Bar,
stressed that attorneys should seek help and remember that
their problem is not unique or insurmountable. Alcoholism,
drug abuse, depression, stress, and related illnesses are not
moral issues, but rather medicail and social problems that
can be treated successfl~ly, he said, He added that the
hotline number, (202) 347-3131, nay be called 24
hours a day.
   Tne January Snowcase Program, Ineffective Assis-
tance of (ounsel (henical Dependency and Lmotional
Distress in the Legal Profession, will be held at the
Washington Marriott Hotel, 1221 22nd Street, N W., on
January 27, 1987. rTerc will be a light buffet from 6-7 p.m,
and the pro.gram will run from 7 8 30 p.m. T'he cost is
S$14,00 in adv ance and $16 00 at the door. Checks should be
sent to the Women s Bar Association of the District of
Columbia, 655 15th Street, N W., Suite 300, Washington,
D.C. 20005, Advancc payment must be received at the
WBA offices no later than Friday, January 23.
