                                  MINUTES OF THE
WOMEN'S BAR ASSOCIATION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
                                  BOARD MEETING
                                NOVEMBER 18,1997

The meeting was called to order by WBA President Saundra Brown at 6:45 P.M. Those
present were Saundra Brown, Mary Clark, Vicky McEneney, Michelle Gary, Elaine Lubin, Julie
Heflin, Kathy Ellis, Susan Swiatek, Cynthia Goode, Mary Kate Whalen, Pat Apfelbaum, Tania
Hanna, Devarieste Curry, Rhonda Lees, Kate Timlin, Melissa Mazor, and the new Executive
 Director Jackie Pumpaly.

Saundra Brown introduced and welcomed Jackie Pumpaly as the new Executive Director
 of the WBA.

 I. Approval of the Minutes (Mary Clark)

The minutes of the October 21, 1997 WBA Board meeting were approved as amended.

H1. Report from the Annual Meeting Committee (Devarieste Curry)

Consistent with this year's focus on volunteering and community service, the theme for
the Annual Dinner will be Lifting As We Climb: Champions of Community Service. They are
currently looking for a keynote speaker and are contacting Colin Powell, Jimmy Carter, and/or
Elizabeth Dole. They are exploring the idea of having a scaled-down dinner as a way of
reflecting the community service theme and as a way of making a bigger donation. Could save
up to $10,00. We'd highlight that the $10,000 would be given to the kinds of organizations that
the WBA Foundation has supported in the past. There will be a video highlighting the kinds of
community service that women lawyers perform.

There was a discussion as to how people would respond to the box dinner idea. Some
board members talked about how the presentation could be quite nice. There was some concern
as to how much service there would be at dinner and that service should be retained. There was
also discussion on how best to sell the box dinner concept. We'll need to be very careful about
PR vis-a-vis the box dinner.

III. Diversity Task Force (Devarieste Curry and Tania Hanna)

Devarieste Curry and Tania Hanna came to tonight's meeting in order to address any
Board concerns regarding the Task Force. Devarieste explained that the Task Force was
originally Tania's idea. At the leadership retreat in June, there was discussion about looking
inward first regarding diversity. The first event of the Task Force was the panel discussion at the
Fall Kick-Off.
