                                    MINUTES OF
THE WOMEN'S BAR ASSOCIATION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
                         BOARD OF DIRECTORS' RETREAT
                                     JUNE 3, 1997

The meeting was called to order at 4:45 p.m. by President Saundra Brown. Those present
were: Saundra Brown, Victoria McEneney, Susan Swiatek, Cynthia Goode, Mary Clark, Patricia
Apfelbaum, Kathryn Ellis, Michelle Gary, Julie Heflin, Elaine Lubin, Mary Kate Whalen, Nancy
Long, and Executive Director Lora Pollari-Welbes.

I. Welcome and Introduction (all)

       We introduced ourselves.

II. The Year Ahead -- Year's Programming Themes (Saundra Brown)

We should try to link our year's programming themes to the long range plan.

Everyone agreed that we should try to view the move to the new office space as a PR event.
We discussed putting an announcement in Legal Times and sending an announcement to law firms,
voluntary bar associations, and non-members who attended the Annual Dinner.

Vicky McEneney spoke about the need to increase senior attorney involvement in the WBA.
Get them involved through the Women in the Law Cable TV series. Do a members on the move
column to highlight senior members. Lobby the Legal Times and Washington Post to do articles
 featuring our senior members.

Everyone talked about the need to broaden our publicity beyond our newsletter and
discussed the possibility of a program with women journalists as Julie Heflin suggested. The
program could address how journalists choose to spin their stories on legal issues and how women
attorneys should learn to develop good relationships with journalists.

We decided to form a subcommittee on PR with Nancy Long, Mary Kate Whalen, Julie
Heflin, Michelle Gary, and Vicky McEneney as members. We may want to ask Jinhee Wilde to join
this effort.

Kathy Ellis reported on the D.C. Bar's Summit on the Status of Women in the Profession,
which was held on May 30, 1997. The summit was organized under Rob Weiner's watch as D.C.
Bar President and was chaired by Delissa Ridgway. The summit was primarily intended to get
managing partners at law firms thinking about things that impede women's advancement in the law.
The summit was expanded to corporations, eight government agencies, and four area law schools.
Board members expressed concern that the WBA was not more involved in organizing the summit.
