                                                   FINAL APPROVED

                         MINUTES OF THE
WOMEN'S BAR ASSOCIATION FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
                    BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
                        NOVEMBER 19, 1996

The meeting was called to order at approximately 5:00 p.m. by
President Nancy Long. Those present at the meeting included
Ellen Berick, Nancy Long, Victoria McEneney, Julie Heflin, Pat
Apfelbaum, Mary Kate Whalen, Loretta Garcia, Cory Amron, Juliana
Schulte O'Reilly, Sue Swiatek and WBA Executive Director Lora
Pollari-Welbes.

I. MINUTES

The Board minutes for October 15, 1996 were approved as
amended.

II. REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (Nancy Long)

There was no action taken by the Executive Committee this
month.
Nancy reported that the D.C. Bar is soliciting nominations for
the Bea Rosenberg award and that the WBA nominees should be in I
place by December 10, 1996. Juliana O'Reilly and Cory Amron will
be screening nominees. Options for nominees will be presented to
the Executive Committee.

III. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT (Lora Pollari-Welbes)

The Board approved the admission of 27 new members.

Lora reported that membership renewals were coming in
following calls made by the Board. She expressed concern about
the lack of new members this month - 27 as compared to 41
received in November of 1995. This may be a possible trend.

The Board discussed ideas concerning what the Board and the
WBA should do to increase new membership and to retain renewals,
especially senior attorneys. The general response from Board
telephone calls to non-renewing senior attorneys, was the
perception that the WBA is primarily useful and/or geared towards
younger, less experienced attorneys.

Ellen Berick reminded the Board to forward names or
information concerning women interested in appointments for the
second Presidential Administration to the National Women's
Political Caucus - Coalition for Women's Appointments.
