Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia
                          2003 Fall Networking Reception
Honoring the Stars of the Bar
                                   Grant Request

In September 2003, the WBA will host the Fall Kick-off Reception, opening our doors to
women lawyers in the DC area. This reception is designed to allow non-members an
experiential way of learning about the WBA and the Women's Bar Association Foundation
(WBAF), in a networking atmosphere. The event provides a platform for the WBA
Committees and Fora to feature their activities, attract new participants, and gather ideas
about programs and issues from the constituency they serve. Last year we took the
unprecedented step of honoring the Stars of the Bar-fifteen legendary WBA members-
each known for her commitment to helping other women develop and achieve success in the
legal profession.

This successful strategy, begun modestly in 2001 with 250 attendees, drew over 600 people
and was a major factor in attracting 150 members in September and October. Many of these
new members have contributed to the success of subsequent WBA and WBAF events, and in
the process, strengthened the Foundation.

We believe that this year's event, following the same format, will attract additional numbers.

This is WBA's only free event, purposefully so to attract as many eligible participants as
possible and increasing WBA's visibility among the women lawyers of our area. In the past,
we have asked sponsors to help defray the costs of the cocktail reception, and we have been
honored by their generosity. The attached budgets provide a perspective on our growth and
our need.

We request that the WBA Foundation consider a grant of $5,000 to help underwrite the costs
of the Fall Networking Reception honoring the Stars of the Bar.

Attached is the general budget outlining expenses involved in this event. We would be
pleased to answer any questions you may have concerning this event.
