' The LAWA program was founded in 1993 in order to find and train promising lawyers from Africa
committed to advancing the cause of women's rights upon return to their countries. In this program, participants
receive a Masters of Law degree with an emphasis on gender studies at Georgetown University Law Center, and
complete a major graduate paper on an African women's rights issue. They are then placed in challenging work
assignments at various public interest or government organizations compatible with their interests and long-term plans
(such as the World Bank, or the Women's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch).
