Of the Comptroller upon the petition of citizens of Erie coun-
ty in relation to Grand Island.

TO THE ASSEMBLY.
The Comptroller, to whom was referred by the Assembly the peti-
tion of residents of Tonawanda, in relation to landcs on Grand Island
in the Niagara river, together with a resolution requesting him to fur-
nish the House with his opinion in regard'to the propriety of granting
the prayer of such petition, respectfully submits the following
REPORT.
The petitioners represent that in their opinion the interests of the
State require that the lands'upon Grand Island be immediately offered
for sale in small parcels to actual settlers. They represent that 'the
principal part of the Island was sold to capitalists in 1824, who in
1834, assigned their forfeited contracts to the East Boston timber com-
pany ; and that this compal.y assigned its interest to the Baltimore
Loan 'nd Trust Company, and the latter assigned to the creditors of
the company in England. And the petitioners give an opinion that
during the last five or six years, companies have been engaged in cut-
ting and removing timber from the Island, and that over half a milion
cubic feet of the most valuable oak timber have been taken from the
