The  Court-Martial of Jefferson Davis

    Could a drink of grog or the casual aswoiin ion of
a young college student w ith a jovial tavern keeper
have changed the course of American histor'? You bet.
Cadet icfl'eron Dav is had both, and the ramitficat ions

perhaps, that of this country As most students of
Amenrcan hislor are aware, Jefferson Day s att nded
the U S. Milhtary Academy at West Point fron 1824 to
I 828 Many  do not know however. that the Inture
Amercan  so dier. congressnan. senator. secretar' of
war, and president of the Confederacy was court-
martialed and convicted at West Poin n 1825 for
drinking  spirituous and intoXicating htqutorIs and

His whole future hung tn the balance durIng the bleak
month of August 1825 as War Department offieils
pondered whether to execute that sentence I his ar-

life of Jefferson Dais

him As Davs  later esplained, he w as at that point 'at

the gromds Whether Jeff Davis intended to seek out
Benn  is unuluar, as Davis later admited only that he

sons Cadet Dav is and his companions made a two-
male trek to Bennys abode and tavern and were soon
