the study of hitory more than ever before-in
traimag. in planning, and in analyting all our
pro    onal ruirement     I aced with great
tecnological opportunity and  unprecedented
developments  in weapons   systems, soldiers
might easily   {nderestima e the importance of
history and overlook the linkage between the
lessons of the past and the challenges of the
future. We mut  insure that this over ,ght does
nor occur-professional soldirt rnust study his-
tory so that insights not only will help illuminate
the future but akso will help develop leadership
traits that are time proven.
  Iuture challenges include the problems of
strateg and tactics, leadership and morale, and
logistics and technology. However, these chal
lenges have been faced before and overcome.

future, They have used the study of history-
including biography  and  autobiography-to
sharpen their judgment, tmprove their percep
iron, broaden their perspective and mold their
leaderhip qualities. Martin Blumenson said:

us, to free us from the time and place in which we are
bomn  not entirely,but to some extent at least--so that
ecrry generation does not have to reinvent the wheel,

and General Staff College and its newly orga-
nized Advanced  Military Studies Department
Recently established faculty positions at the
Army  War  College have enhanced military his-
tory instruction there, and the Training and
D    inc Command's branch histor   ans  are


bringing greater historical emphasis to the
bran h  sh   Is. In the ROTC  program,  the
study of history has been given new vigor. All
this puts mitiary hitory education in he Army
on a sound insttutional footing.
  However,  profesional development of offi
c rs and NCO   goe  beond  instiutions  Is
kitimately, a soldier's personal responsibility.
Given all other demands, it takes individual tm
'itK C- the    ition  haI  ark o  Amercan
fighting men-t   expe d that   t°   fort to
enrich one's professional development. Class
room  instruction and guided research provide
only part of what the soldier needs. The Center
o  Mi hary  History and thi  penidiaI,  The
Army  Historwin, are moving beyond the institu-
nonal programs tf instri tion to foster a spirit
of historical mindedness in our professional
