THE RELATIVE INFLUENCE

                    OF THE

LAWYER IN MODERN LIFE

AN ADDRESS DELIVERED AT EARL HALL, COLUMBIA, UNIVERSITY,
AT THE INVITATION OF THE TRUSTEES AND FACULTIES OF
THE UNIVERSITY, TO THE GRADUATES AND ALUMNI
OF THE LAW SCHOOL, ON MAY 25, 1908

                      BY

               JAMES M. BECK
                          iO
             OF THE NEW YORK BAR

I look down into all that wasp-nest or bee-hive, and
witness their wax laying and honey making, and poison
bearing and choking with sulphur. From the Palace
Esplanade, and down to the low lane, I see it all, for except
the Schlosskirche weathercock, no biped stands so high.-
