EMERALD CITY REPORT

The 96th Annual Meeting and Con-
ference of the American Associa-
tion of Law Libraries (MAXIMIZE
today envision tomorrow) will be
held in Seattle this year. Because of
its arboreous nature, Seattle has been
nicknamed the Emerald City. Be-
sides trees, there's majestic Mt.
Rainier, and picturesque Elliott Bay
in Puget Sound. For manmade stuctures, there's the
Space Needle, Monorail, several fine museums, the
Aquarium, the new Experience Music Project, Wash-
ington State Ferries, Microsoft and
Boeing, and 1000 ways to serve Nv4AXI
salmon*, to namejust a few attractions.
Despite a lugubrious reputation, the e
weather when last the convention was t !t
held there (1994) was very pleasant.
The downtown streets are exception-
ally wide, so crossing them must be done with pru-
dence and alacrity. Disregarding the obvious movie as-
sociation (the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan bromide), one can
be a part of Seattle cinematic history by occupying a
chair at the Virginia Inn, where Campbell Scott and
Kyra Sedgewick first explored the possibilities of ro-
mance in Singles. Or, the casual city adventurer can
watch large fishes getting flung around in Pike Place
Market.
For those of you who will be attending the pro-
grams, the Micrographics-Audio/Visual SIS has two
entries worth checking out. On Sunday, July 13, at 1:30,
Jerry Dupont and Terry McCormack teach us about
reliable long-term media storage in a 75-minute pro-
gram, B-3 Analog Media: Maximum Preservation
for Today and Tomorrow. Along with Jerry and Terry

                   will be Roger Markham from
                   Eastman Kodak Co. and John
                   Bishop ofNorsam Technologies,
                   who will discuss a fascinating
                   project called High Density
                   Rosetta, which allows for analog
storage of up to 196,000 letter-
sized images on a nickel plate 2
square. If you are staying around
                   until Wednesday the 16th, the
                   ever-educational Laura Ray will
be presenting a 30-minute program, K-3, Effective Vi-
sualization of Information for Teaching and Com-
munication, at 1:45. An often-overlooked subject, even
             among information professionals, can be
the simple legibility and clarity of visual
             aids used in educational programs.
Slon *No kidding. There's salmon burgers, pan-
cakes, sausage and quiche to name just a few. For
a more incredibly comprehensive list (though not
an official Seattle link) consult http-Z
             www-cooksrecipeslcom/seafood-recipes/salmon-
recipes html and get out the fish knife. For information on the
many attractions in Seattle visit wwwseattleattractions com.
