NEWS FROM THE CONVENTION

A stone's throw from Disneyland.. .but miles
from anything, the 91' annual meeting of the
             American Association of Law
             Libraries (AALL) convened in
             A n a h e i m,
             California in July,
             1998. Within
             earshot of the
             Magic Kingdom,
             the usual madness
             and splendor of a
             mass gathering of
law librarians played itself out in the
southern California sun to the theme
of New Horizons, and the
Micrographics-Audio/Visual
Special Interest Section was as
much a part of the goings-on than
ever before.
    Though the usual seven core
members were not all present, as
stalwarts Terrence McCormack
(SUNY Buffalo) and Gary Bravy
(Georgetown) remained unicoastal
and stayed home, the presence of
the M-A/V SIS was felt from every
corner of the convention.
To start with, the Conference of
Newer Law Librarians (CONELL)
held its Marketplace on Saturday, I am Fichen
July 11. As they made the rounds
to each SIS table, all new members were obliged
to answer a question submitted by each SIS prior

to the convention. Our question was: What SIS
is most likely to help you with 24x, 16mm, Hi8,
S-VHS and DVD? Okay, not exactly a
conundrum, but it did get people thinking about
us. A couple of people expressed an interest in
the Section, but none showed any desire to join.
Still it was a good opportunity to get enmeshed
with AALL happenings.
                  Throughout most of the
conference the M-A/V SIS table in
the Activities Area of the Exhibit
              Hall was staffed, featuring law-
              related motion pictures on video
and a promotional clip of the
              Social Law Library's Oral History
Project. At the table sat either
              outgoing chair Laura Ray
              (Cleveland-Marshall) or old
              faithful John Pedini (Social Law
              Library). Laura would radiate her
usual warmth and grace as she
              knowledgeably answered the
              questions of passers-by while John
              was particularly apprehensive
about his presentation for the 14'
of July, E-6 In Their Own Words:
              Videotaping Oral History. In his
thirteen or so years of attending the
national meetings, it was the first
time he was actually presenting a
program, so naturally he was very
anxious to do a good job. It would
not be, however, his big moment
dore me! in the spotlight. That would come
from a part he played in another
program that will be forever linked
 to his professional legacy.
