SIS Program At 1998 AALL Annual Meeting

The Micrographics/Audiovisual SIS has one program at this year's AALL Annual Meting
in Anaheim, and you really do not want to miss it! John Pedini (Director of Media Services, Social
Law Library) will present, and Laura Ray (Media/Reference Librarian, Cleveland-Marshall College
of Law Library) will coordinate, In Their Own Words: Videotaping Oral History on Tuesday, July
14th, from 9:45am till 10:45am. John has been the Social Law Library videographer for almost 100
oral history interviews with members of the Massachusetts legal community, including such
personalities as former governor and presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, Watergate special
prosecutor Archibald Cox, and professor Charles Ogletree, counsel for Anita Hill. In his
presentation, John will discuss the background of the Social Law Library's oral history project,
explain and examine the basics of videotape production techniques, suggest research and
interviewing considerations and methods, offer long-term storage and cataloging recommendations,
offer examples of actual oral histories, and relate anecdotes from his near decade-long involvement
in this field.

While it has long been a staple of news reporting and family gatherings, modern video
technology also offers the librarian, archivist, or historian a means of creating a living record of a
member of a library, school, business, or community that can be both educational and personal. In
Their Own Words: Videotaping Oral History will help you to recognize, research, and record the
experiences of people in their professional and personal community for historical perspective. This
presentation will also demonstrate to the individual unfamiliar, or fairly familiar, with videotape
technology how to capture an oral history suitable for archival use.

Finally, be prepared to be entertained, as well as educated. In addition to his incredible
breadth of knowledge on filrri and audiovisual technology, John Pedini is widely known for his wit
and humor. Again, this is one presentation you do not want to miss!
