            MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

                    by Michael Klepper

Before I begin discussing this year's convention, I would be amiss
if I did not thank Stella Chiang both for her assistance throughout
the year in working with me on the program and in serving as our
SIS Chair. Stella has been of great help to our SIS and
considering the fact that she moved her Library this past year,
it's amazing to me that she is still functioning. And while I'm
giving thanks, let me mention a couple of more names worthy of our
thanks. Once again Isabel Wingerter has agreed to edit our
Newsletter. This is Isabel's second year as Editor, and she
continue's to produce an excellent newsletter. Isabel has some new
columns planned and as always, I'm sure she would appreciate any
ideas or items you wish to include. In that not everyone can
attend the national conventions, the newsletter is the only way for
our SIS to communicate and it is important that we all keep the
newsletter in mind when we run across something worth sharing.

Another person to thank is Nina Casio who in our last newsletter
prepared the first draft of the Directory of
Audiovisual/Micrographic be a much used resource. Ellen Gibson,
our new SIS Secretary, will be taking over from Nina and expanding
upon the basic Directory. Another mailing will be sent out with
the Newsletter and I hope everyone will take the time to return the
form to Ellen. Ellen is in the process of preparing this form and
should any of you have ideas or suggestions for the form, Ellen
would be happy to hear from you.

Gary Bravy, our new SIS Vice-Chair, is busily planning for next
year and has sent in requests for two programs. These programs, as
discussed by Gary in this issue, look very promising. Programs
which the SIS wish to sponsor are brought up for discussion during
our SIS business meetings at the AALL Convention. The Vice-Chair,
by default, assumes the role of Session Chair and is reponsible for
presenting our preliminary program ideas to the AALL Program Chair,
this year being Sally Wiant. From this brief senario, you can see
that if you did not make it to the AALL Convention, and you had a
program suggestion, you were probably out of luck in bringing up
for discussion your program idea. While we have been very
fortunate in the past with our programs, it would be nice to see a
larger participation in the discussion for programs our SIS can
sponsor. Realizing that not all can make it to an AALL Convention,
I think it possible to use our Newsletter as a sounding board for
   possible program ideas.
