from the chair...

by Nina Cascio

    Primary goals of the AV/Micrographics
SIS are to disseminate information on,
and promote effective, creative use of,
 micrographic and audiovisual materials
 and technologies in law libraries.
Those of you who attended the SIS
business meeting in Houston know that
for an hour or.so a vast array of topics,
issues, problems, and ideas were tossed
 about, ever-so-briefly discussed, and
*4 n abandoned (at least formally) when
meeting ended. I know that every-
one's concerns and ideas still exist,
especially now that we are all back
in our respective domains. I would
like to see this newsletter become
an effective vehicle for sharing ideas
 and offering information that might
help everyone, or someone, solve problems
and answer questions related to micro-
 forms, videotapes, films, audiotapes,
and equipment and how they fit into
 the library environment.
The concerns and ideas that might
be addressed are endless. On micro-
forms: What is the latest on standards
 for counting volume equivalents?...
 What are the comparative characteristics
of silver halide, diazo and vesicular?...
 Do librarians feel publishers should
offer a choice in type of film?...What
is being done about the problem of govern-
 ment document serials arbitrarily alter-
nating between print and fiche format?...
What kind of information should publishers
 provide on microfiche headers?...Does
anyone have a critical evaluation of
    ticular microform publications or
    jipment?... Any recommended supplies?...
What are librarians doing about preserving
 and cleaning microform collections?
On audiovisuals: What are law school,
law firm, and court libraries doing

in this area?.. .Have any networks for
sharing materials been successfully
established?...What kind of video equip
ment are law libraries using?...How
should audiovisual materials be
evaluated?.. .Does anyone recommend
particular productions?.. .What sources
are available to locate AV materials?.
What do the copyright laws say about
films and videotapes in the library?..
Are you interested in any of these
issues? Do you have opinions or
questions in these or other areas?
If you've read something you think
 SIS members might find relevant,
why not cite it, briefly summarize
it, and send it to the newsletter?
Please feel free to contact me re-
garding issues you'd like to see
 addressed in the newsletter. You
can call or write to me or our news-
letter editor, Susan Huff. I know
 we aren't all book-oriented solitary
 xenophobiacs' This is our chance'
