                     VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
By Betsy McKenzie, Suffolk University
Law Library Director and Associate
Professor of Law

The ABA is sponsoring the Children's
SSI Project: Helping Children with Disabili-
ties. As a result of the 1996 Welfare Reform
Act, many disabled children are being de-
nied SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
eligibility. You can volunteer with state and
local organizations to assist these families in
their appeals. You do not have to be a
lawyer to represent the claimants up
through the Administrative Law Judge level.
You can find out more on the ABA web
page:

or by calling Julie E. Justicz, the Project
Director at (312) 988-5765 or via e-mail:
justiczj@staff.abanet.org.

I recently signed up to participate in
this project and my local organization,
Volunteer Lawyers in Boston has been just
wonderful. They supply office space, con-
sultation, reimbursement for expenses, and
lots of encouragement. SSI cases are very
narrow and once you have handled one or
two, you have a good feel for the issues. I

feel confident that this type of case is not
going to look like a simple little case and
then blow up into some time-consuming
monster. And if it does, I feel confident that
the Volunteer Lawyers will help me out.
Frankly, I may find it easier to volunteer
than some members, since I am the director
of a library, and nobody is going to tell me I
can't take some work time to work on the
case if I need to. On the other hand, I still
have to get all my work done, no matter how
long it takes me. So, I have developed
some little tricks to get it all done.
I take public transportation to and from
work. While I'm riding in on the subway, I
read my newsletters and journals. I sort
Rothman greenslips while I wait for meet-
ings to start. I try to set up as much of my
work as possible into systems. There is a
system in place to deal with prisoner re-
quests, for instance, or gift books. The
system functions automatically, with each
staff member knowing ahead of time what
they do and how they do it. So I spend a lot
less time making decisions on repeating
issues.
It still is hard to squeeze out the time,
