LETITER FROM THE CHAIR

Postcard from Pittsburgh (1995)

       Besides being awfully hot and
humid, the 88th Annual Meeting of AALL
in Pittsburgh's July set a precedent for our
 profession. That precedent involved the
participation of non-law librarians in our
 programs as speakers and listeners.

       Besides feeling more motivated and
better informed as one usually does after
these meetings, I felt moved by the
burgeoning, positive spirit of cooperation
demonstrated among the various partners
in the legal and library communities who
were present.

       The invitation of delegates
representing diverse roles in the legal and
information science-related professions to
participate in the National Conference of
Legal Information Issues has brought us
together in dialogue. Through the
continuation of that dialogue, we can
better appreciate our respective needs and
frailties and admire each other's
contributions to the successful handling of
our roles in an age affected by difficult
economic issues and rapid technological
change. I, for one, 'am glad to see court
administrators, judges, attorneys, public
librarians, trustees, elected public officials,
book publishers, and electronic publishers
given the opportunity to share their ideas

Truly, from July 15 to 21, 1995, we were
all Connected for Justice in Pittsburgh.

One Man's Humble Inventory of LISP
Issues

       The prospect of providing legal
information to the public has developed
countless issues and sub-issues deserving
our attention. Today, there is a lot more
for us to remedy and assuage then the
specter of the unauthorized practice of law
and the usual financial constraints on law
libraries.

Our staffs diligently face on a daily
basis several areas of public service that
raise issues we need to address and
provide leadership and direction on
handling:

- coping with the service needs of and
problems related to difficult patrons

- operating as an informed and connected
information and referral agency in our
legal communities (by maintaining a
rapport and dialogue with the staffs of Pro
Bono projects, legal services offices, social
services agencies, court clerks and county
recorders, local bar associations and
lawyer referral services)

- preparing pathfinders, bibliographies and
other tools to assist the legal self-help
efforts of citizen patrons
