LEGAL INFORMATION SERVICE TO THE

VOLUME 7 NO. 1

PUBLIC SPECIAL INTEREST SECTION

FALL 1994

   LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

It was wonderful to meet with you
all in Seattle. Unlike other organizations,
we only meet once a year, so our meetings
are a time for renewing our ties, seeing
old friends, and making new ones.

I want to thank Frank Weston
especially for agreeing to edit this
newsletter for another year. A good
editor is hard to find. As you can see,
Frank does a superb job and turns out one
of the best AALL newsletters.

Another thank you goes to Jody
Armstrong. Jody worked for over three
years on our Pro Bono Project. She kept
up-to-date a database of legal service
delivery teams. Jody has promised to
continue to publicize the project through
her local Chapter newsletters. She
supports the establishment of an award for
AALL members for outstanding service
pro bono project volunteers.

      I have forwarded Jody's suggestion
to the AALL Board of Directors and
hopefully a public service award will be
offered every year by AALL. Among our
LISP members are many volunteers who
are already deserving of the award.

Beth Schneider compiled the list of
the original project contacts and also
deserves a bow. The Chicago, Southern
California, and New York Chapters of
AALL all have healthy, ongoing pro bono
support committees.

      Another development is the
establishment of the first Chapter LISP
committee. The Southwestern Chapter of
AALL (SWALL) formed the committee
with Beth Schneider as Chair. The
impetus of the creation of the committee
was, in part, financial. When SWALL
established itself as a nonprofit
corporation, the members realized that
they would have a difficult time justifying
non-profit tax status if their Chapter did
not support some activity in which
members did not have a direct gain. I
hope that this new committee is only the
first of many LISP committees within the
AALL chapters.

      Only through cooperative efforts
such as these, can we truly establish a
national program of law library service to
the public.

      Maria Protti
      Chair
