LEGAL INFORMATION SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC SPECTA.L;INTEREST SECTION

VOLUME 1, No. 1 SEPTEMBER 1988

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR:

Welcome to the Legal Information Service to thw' Public SIS. I hope
th.at this, our charter year, will lay a strong foundation for the future.
The extent to which individual members participate in the SIS programs and
activities will determine our success. Therefore, please take time to
review the committee selection form, make your choices, and return the-
form to me at your earliest convenience.

As of the end of August I've learned of no new developments concerning
the Special Committee on Organizational Structure's recommendation that
we be merged with the Readers' Services SIS. To better reflect our
unique position in AALL, Glen Ahlers has revised Article 2: Object of
the Bylaws. Elsewhere in the Newsletter is a ballot by which you can
indicate you acceptance or rejection of the new language. Please
return it promptly.

Pam Williams has done an excellent job converting the broc-hure for
the Legal Information Service to the Public Committee into one suitable
for our new SIS. As soon as the status of our finances is determined,
it will be reprinted.

Roberta Studwell is continuing to work on the proposed video on
researching Supreme Court cases. At the November AALL Executive Board
meeting we will resubmit our request for seed money to get the script
written. Bobbie has been working on this very time-consuming project
solo. I encourage anyone interested in this area to volunteer to serve
on the video committee to give her some help.

. On October 8th I will be in Chicago for an AALL-sponsored training
session for SIS chairs. I'm looking forward to it because,as of now,
I have a lot of unanswered questions.

My thanks for all the work that has been done since Atlanta. Special
thanks to Mary Beth Dunn for volunteering to serve as Newsletter Editor.
All members are encouraged to contact me with any questions or suggestions.
