UPDATE XXV: What's New on Westlaw,
LexisNexis®, HeinOnline, and Loislaw
by Stacey L. Gordon
Westlaw Additions, Changes, and Enhancements
West nutshells and hornbooks are now available on Westlaw. Over 100 titles from
West's® Nutshell Series® and more than 25 hornbook titles will be available, with
tables of contents. Searches in nutshell and hornbook databases include
ResultsPlus® results.
User documentation is now available on 14 Westlaw tabbed pages. On these 14
pages, the Shortcuts frame contains links to topic research guides, database lists,
and Westlaw user guides. For researchers using hourly billing, billing is suspended
while the viewer is using the user guides. User documentation is available on these
tabbed pages: Bankruptcy Practitioner, Business Practitioner, Commercial,
Employment Practitioner, Environmental Practitioner, Estate Planning Practitioner,
Family Law Practitioner, Government Contracts, Immigration Practitioner, Labor
and Employment, Patent Practitioner, Pension and Retirement, Real Property
Practitioner. and Securities Practitioner.
The new U.S. GAO Federal Legislative Histories (FED-LH) database greatly
simplifies the process of compiling a federal legislative history. Researchers only
need know the public law number or name of the act to retrieve a compiled legisla-
tive history. Alternatively, researchers can obtain a compiled legislative history if
they know only a report number, Congressional Record citation, or hearing number.
GAO Federal Legislative Histories are also available on the Federal Legislative
Histories tab and in the Links tab for selected public laws and statutes. Compiled
legislative histories contain links to PDF views of the fulltext documents. The data-
base currently contains more than 9,300 compiled legislative histories for acts
passed between 1924 and 1995, and will eventually contain more than 20,000
compiled legislative histories.
Two new tools have been incorporated into Westlaw 50 State Surveys® that allow
researchers to customize surveys and expand their research results. West Survey
Builder allows researchers to build a survey using a template to select a topic,
specific question, and jurisdiction(s). Survey Builder compiles a survey of relevant
statutes and jurisdictions. Survey Authority expands 50 State Surveys to include
state statutes, caselaw, administrative regulations, attorney general opinions, ALR®
annotations, treatises and law reviews, and insurance bulletins. Survey Authority
reports are currently available for issues in corporations, environmental law,
