Monday
There's a call from the Boston office. They want to have access to Maine materi-
als, preferably MCLE titles that are supposed to be available on Loislaw. I log on,
but don't see any secondary materials. Loislaw has been acquired by Aspen.
Maybe something is in the works. I call the rep on the card I find stapled to the
file. He doesn't answer; I leave a voicemail message.
My EIS (electronic information specialist) stops by. She is now completely
Microsoft certified. She is still attached to the library but works even closer with
MIS and has a counterpart on the MIS side. Together they have compiled a list of
all the firm's electronic subscriptions and coded it to show which department
supports which application. It has worked well, and smudging the boundaries of
the three departments (MIS, Research, and Legal Systems Support) has worked
well for the firm. She tells me that the UN Treaty Collection has been canceled
without notice. She needs a credit card number or they will not permit us to sign
back on. I give her my card and ask her to create a paper trail for accounting.
Tuesday
While reviewing my Westlaw variance, I am shocked to find over $10,000 billed
to 9999 instead of legitimate client matter numbers. I find the original bill and
check it closely. There are no user names next to the West IDs. I remember now
that EIS has been working closely with West to make a seamless interface via the
West Tool Kit. I wanted to equalize our small book-less libraries by embedding
user IDs on our firm intranet so that users could search West's treatises without
charging clients. Thus, what had traditionally been retrieved from a book could be
retrieved online and not be a cost item, but $10,000 is a lot of Wright and Miller.
Users are obviously going into the treatises and then branching out and searching
