Update XIV:
What's New on Westlaw and Lexis
by Fritz Snyder
Welcome to the Legal Information Alert annual review and comparison of services
and features added to Lexis and Westlaw during the last 12 months. This article is
current through August 1997. For last year's summary, see the 1996 November/
December issue of Legal Information Alert.
New Additions and Enhancements to Westlaw
Abstracts of real property tax assessor records for selected counties, cities, and towns
in 36 states and the District of Columbia are now available. Documents usually
contain the property owner's name and address, a description of the property, tax
assessment information, and sales information from the most recent sale of the
property. Database identifier: RPA; e.g., for Alabama: AL-RPA. (Law schools may not
access this database.)
The easiest way to track proposed or changed Federal Rules is to run a periodic
WestClip search in the US-Orders database. (Noted by Eric Kaufman of the New
York County Lawyers' Association.)
To perform nationwide or state-specific searches of business and professional Doing
Business As Records, access ALL-DBA or xx-DBA (where xx is the state's two-letter
postal abbreviation). Records include 47 states and the District of Columbia. You can
search by business/owner name, telephone number, or SIC code/industry tracker.
(There is no law school access.)
More than 622 additional publications have been provided by Dow Jones & Co.,
including Asahi/Shimbun Evening News (AIWASAH), The Asian Wall Street Journal
Weekly (AWSJWKLY), transcripts of Geraldo (GERALDO), and transcripts of The
Jerry Springer Show (JRYSPGRS).
