The ALERT 50 PIus:
A List of the Most Useful
Reference Sources for Law Librarians
Compiled by Barbara D. Morgan
Traditional approaches to the practice of law are changing rapidly with times of
tighter economic constraints as well as constantly expanding international legal
markets. One of the more effective methods of meeting these modern challenges is
to become affiliated with other independent law firms and exchange information
and resources.
Although several of these legal affiliations located across the United States and in
selected world markets now are active in the legal marketplace, Commercial Law
Affiliates is currently the largest. Headquartered in Minneapolis with more than 136
member firms and 179 offices worldwide, CLA is the only such group that monitors
client satisfaction and member quality.
Since my own firm is a member of CLA, I canvassed the law librarians of CLA's
member firms for input on updating The ALERT 50 in order for the list to reflect
current solutions for the more diverse needs and expanded problems of legal
research in the 1990s. Their help has been invaluable in broadening the scope of this
article.
The first ALERT 50, written by Steven Mitchel and published in 1987, was
updated by Peg LaFrance in February 1990. Both lists also were helpful in compil-
ing this revision.
