What's new in legal publications,
databases and research techniques.

Volume 6, Number 1

JANUARY 1987

It is surprising how many sleepless nights
it takes to decide which reference
sources to include in a list such as this,
and more importantly, which ones to
sacrifice. Inclusion is based on demand,
on proven usefulness in the field. Books
that may be perfectly suited for answer-
ing specific questions were not included,
if those questions do not arise often. But
sources that always seem to be just the
thing for answering a wide range of
common and potentially difficult ques-
tions were included. In some cases, they
have proven themselves to the best from
a wide selection; in most cases, however,
they are unique.
Sources that concentrate on one
specialized subject or one limited geo-
graphic area were excluded, since they
would serve a narrow range of libraries.
The intention is to include only books
that should be considered indispensable
for virtually all law libraries.
This list could not have been compiled
from the experience of one reference

librarian. Acknowledgment goes to Nell
Ingalls of Winston & Strawn, Chicago, to
Allen Story of Finley, Kumble, Washing-
ton, DC and to Donna Tuke Heroy, editor
of the ALERT. From the academic
perspective, acknowledgment goes to
Camille Riley of the West Virginia
University Law Library, Jane Strable and
Charles TenBrink of the University of
Chicago Law School Library.
Legal Research
How to Find the Law. 8th ed. Morris L.
Cohen & Robert C. Berring. St. Paul:
West, 1983.
Consistently answers questions about
legal research tools and how to use
them.
Effective Legal Research. 4th ed. Miles
Price & Harry Bitner. Boston: Little,
Brown, 1979.
Not as current as Cohen, but more
detailed. This is the book to which other
books on legal research refer.

From The Editor
We can't believe that the ALERT is
starting its sixth volume! When we
started the ALERT we knew what kind of
a product we wanted to provide: a better
way for the law librarian to keep up with
all the developments in legal publishing,
including databases, than by reading all
the junk mail. It's not very efficient to
open three direct mail pieces from the
same company for the same title.
The ALERT is still dedicated to that
underlying purpose. We've also ex-
panded along the way. Practical, concise
book reviews written by your colleagues
help you make purchasing decisions. For
Your Information provides you with
information on the legal publishing in-
dustry. Database additions and changes
are reported in Database News. Experi-
enced librarians exchange research tips
in Tricks of the Trade. The lead articles
range from a in-depth database review
to a discussion of a legal information
management issue all designed to help
you improve information services at your
institution. For example, the lead article
in this issue, by Steve Mitchel, provides
you not only with a list of the best
general reference sources for law li-
braries but gives you some irreverent
reasons why they made the list.
