DOMESTIC RELATIONS
A Women's Issue: The Politics of Family
Law Reform in England. Dorothy M.
Stetson. 1982. Greenwood Press. 278p.
LC: 81-13465. ISBN: 0-313-23087-0.
$29.95. The struggle for legal reform of
rights accorded to married women in
England has been primarily an effort to
overcome the common law doctrine of
couverture. Under this concept, married
women could not own property, had no
standing in court, were not liable for con-
tracts and torts, and could not sue for
divorce. This book is a chronicle of the
progress of change in English public pol-
icy toward the status of women in the
family. Since the mid-nineteenth century
Parliament has substantially altered laws
concerning women's rights and respon-
sibilities in marriage. These reforms
came about through determined efforts
of several generations of English
feminists. The events leading to these
changes are presented in a conceptual
framework that focuses on conflict reso-
lution within the political process. The
study highlights the changing rela-
tionship between feminist politics and
British political processes.
