This Time, Don't Say No
                  by Mary Gilligan
                  Pennie & Edmonds

As the presidential election is getting into high
gear, on the local level, there is another election of
significance which requires your attention. No, this
isn't a plug for either NY Senatorial candidate or non-
candidate, after all, I'm a Jersey Girl, and we have
other fish to fry. The election of importance, is for the
Officers and Board members of your association,
LLAGNY.
I never thought I'd be touting the rewards of partici-
pation as a member of the LLAGNY Board. More than

K years ago, when my name was on the ballot, even
idn't vote for me. Later, when I was approached
again to run, I had plenty of excuses. Maybe some of
the same excuses you've used. We're a tiny depart-
ment in a large firm, so down time doesn't exist.
For at least a six year period, we were moving a
library either in NY or one of the branch offices. After
a long tough day in the work-place battle field, I was
entitled to a life.
This call, I ran out of new excuses. I was still
cautious about having my name placed on the ballot,

because there was that chance, I might get elected. If
ever there were a reluctant candidate, it was me. How
much time will this take out of my already time-
deprived life? One night a month isn't all that much,
even over a two-year period. One late night a month
isn't all that much even when you have to take the not
so frequently running in the evening Hooterville Trol-
ley (aka NJ Transit) to Timbuktu (aka the Jersey Shore).
After all, it's only one night a month.
What I did not know then, and probably would not
have believed, is that the benefits received from my
time as a Board member have far surpassed any effort
on my part. The Officers and Board members are the
finest professionals and some of the nicest people you
will be lucky to know. They become your private sup-
port group and cheering section. I have made friends
who I can turn to at any time in my career, and I thank
them all for the past two years, which have been truly
rewarding. Being an Officer or Board member is one of
those rare opportunities in life to voice an opinion and
have it seriously considered. Even if we disagree, we
treat each other with respect. Our meetings are full of
great ideas. I'll let you in on a Board secret, the meet-
ings have considerable amounts of laughter, too. You
get the chance to break out of your daily routine and
see other parts of the city. Heck, if I can be a Board
member, anyone can.
Since I have this opportunity to talk about my
experience, I must mention the incredible work done by
the extremely talented and hard-working Committee
Chairs and members. I'm astounded and humbled at
every meeting by their dedication to this association.
You will receive far more than you will give, and
remember, it's only one night a month, and a few e-
mails, between meetings. Should you get a call from
a member of the Nominations Committee, this time,
don't say no.
