EUROPE ONLINE
by Jean Davis and Victoria Szymczak
     Brooklyn Law School Library

The European Union web site is located at http://
 europa.eu.int.
When you arrive at Europa you are invited to pur-
sue your research in one of 10 European languages
(the eleventh language, Greek, is not yet available).
Click on the language of your choice and you will enter
a well-structured web site that allows you access to EU
News, the ABCs of the EU, Institutions and their publi-
cations (such as the European Parliament and Council
of Ministers), and Policies (which is a subject-driven
access point).

EU News
Perhaps the most beneficial division of this web
page is the EU News link. On this page you can link to
press releases from the EU institutions, determine the
current exchange rate for the EURO, and access
EUR-OP the office for EU publications. At EUR-OP
you can dig deeper for access to the Official Journal.
The most recent 20 days of this daily are available for
free. The L series 'Legislation' contains all the legisla-
tive acts and regulations whose publication is obliga-
tory under the Treaties establishing the European Com-
munities, as well as a large number of acts that do not
carry a statutory obligation to publish. The C series

'Information and Notices' covers a wide range of Union
information, such as proposals for legislation, reports
of the progress of cases before the Court of Justice,
written questions put by the European Parliament to the
Council and the Commission together with their relative
answers. The S series, or supplement, includes infor-
mation on RFPs for construction proposals. Access to
historical editions of the OJ is available on CELEX.
CELEX is a for-fee database requiring a user name and
password at this web site. We can access CELEX on
the LEXIS 7.0 research software in the WORLD library,
LEGIS file. If you are using the Exchange web product,
you can point to EC Legislation.

ABCs
If you select to view the ABC arm of this site, you
will learn about the history of the EU, find links to the full
text versions of founding treaties, and obtain current
information about EU legislation and events. A sam-
pling of the type of current information you will find
includes a guide to citizens' rights, a recording of the
European International Anthem, and that the number of
members now equals fifteen. The ABC division of this
web site will also provide you with links to important EU
agencies and programs, such as Eurostat, the statisti-
cal office of the European Communities.

Institutions
Selecting the Institutions Link will load a page pro-
viding direct access to the home pages of the EU
institutions, including the Parliament, Council of Minis-
ters (a/k/a Council of Europe), EU Commission, and the
Court of Justice. Upon entering each institution's web
site, the user will need to select the language of choice
before proceeding. Some important information can be
found on these institutional home pages. At the Council
