         PRESIDENT'S LETTER
By: Paulette Toth, Richards & O'Neil
I am looking forward to the coming year with great
excitement. I sit writing this in August shortly after
hearing the challenges and charges to Chapters
presented by Captain Kirk, I mean, Mark Estes, the
new President of AALL, under the rubric, Law
Librarianship: The Next Generation. I am gratified
to see that LLAGNY is well on its way to complying
with our parent organization's goals thanks to our

rWFheriie Strategic P . I was amazed in
thereeting> Psidents I attended at
how many times I could say to myself, We already
do that, when programs were suggested.
My focus for the Next Generation will be to begin
short and long term planning to ensure the future of
LLAGNY. My colleagues on the Board and I must
face the problems of the present governing
structure of LLAGNY.
We can never meet the challenges facing law
librarianship in the coming years with the labor and
creativity of a handful of people.
Our past structure had the Board and a few other
Committee Chairs running an organization of over
900 members. The Board members served as
Chairs of certain committees which meant that
each year there would be a new Committee Chair
as the Board changed. Often the new Committee
Chairs had never even served on the committees
they were supposed to lead. As the learning curve
hit its peak around January or so, the Committee
Chair would scramble for four or five months to
accomplish major goals. In other words, each year
we reinvented the wheel.
This year I have appointed new Chairs separate
from Board members who will serve as liaisons to
the committees and will be responsible for long
term planning.
In addition, with the help of Jack Ellenberger of
Shearman & Sterling, we will be presenting a bylaw
change to the membership which will extend the
terms of Board members to two years. In that way
Committee Chairs may change, but the Board
members will be there a little longer to provide
some historic focus on what was done in the past
year and why.
The motivation behind all of this is to get as many
of you active in the organization as possible by
providing more levels of participation.
I know that many of you feel that holding a
leadership position in LLAGNY is just too much
