FROM THE PRESIDENT

By: Martha Goldman, Jones Day, Reavis &
Pogue

You might say that I'm an Old Timer. I've been
a law librarian for 14 years and have answered to
different names: Martha from Milbank, Martha
from Cravath, Martha from Kelley Drye, Martha
from CBS and Martha from Jones, Day. But
during this time one constant has remained:
Martha, LLAGNY member. I cannot fathom being
a law librarian in New York City without being
involved in some way with our organization. It is
difficult to imagine a professional law library
career without the support and resources of
LLAGNY. Perhaps my commitment to LLAGNY
and the experience of having served on the
Board of Directors twice in the early 1980's has

imbued me with a particular perspective. I have
always enjoyed getting involved in our Chapter at
some level when time permits.

Lately, I have heard two disturbing comments:
LLAGNY is so large that new members feel lost
and members of long standing don't know
anyone anymore. Yes, it is impossible to know
everyone in this Chapter and we often tend to
stick to our groups of friends at a meeting or
social function (assuming you attend which is the
first hurdle). Personally, I consider it an achieve-
ment if I meet five new people at a LLAGNY
event. Yet, do you recall how good you felt the
last time you were able to match a name with a
voice, or finally meet that person who helped you
with a particularly difficult bit of library business?

New Yorkers are busy. Sometimes I think we
work faster and harder than anyone else. These
days, the clich6 that one of the keys to success is
not what you know but who you know is truer
than ever. How can you take advantage of this
statement to further your own objectives and
expand your horizons? Take a little bit of time
and use it well by attending a LLAGNY event. To
my pals who have been around for awhile, I
suggest renewing acquaintances. Look around
you. Take the initiative and introduce yourself to
someone you haven't met previously. There are
hundred of members you don't know who can
possibly enrich your work life. To new members
who may be hesitant to attend an event because
you don't know many people, I suggest attending
a small event if a big meeting seems overwhelm-
ing. You can make some great contacts, learn
something and start to reap the benefits of
paying your membership dues. LLAGNY is more
than interlibrary loan - we are a network at many
levels.

What's the first event this year? I'll be there. I
want to meet new members and members I
haven't met before. I'll also be greeting old
acquaintances and former colleagues. Now that
we've said hello to each other, say hello to
someone new. This could catch on. See you
then!
