                           PRESIDENT'S LETTER

After serving on jury duty for several days, I
returned to my firm to find that in my absence it
had been strongly suggested by a senior partner
that I incorporate 84 linear feet of books that had
been housed in a satellite library into the main
library collection. Faced with such a request,
knowing that I have exactly six months growth at
the end of Federal Supplement and Federal Reporter,
and no growth at all in my treatise collection, I
began to wonder whatever possessed me to become a
            law librarian.
Fortunately, not too much later I received a
telephone call from a librarian who was looking for
some information. In that librarian I found
someone who was willing and able to commiserate
with me, as well as offering moral support and
practical advice. It's at times like these that I
really love LLAGNY. I love that there is a
community of people who know and understand what I
do, and what my problems are, and even more, are
always willing to help. Now, I won't say that I've
never had a nasty, unhelpful librarian on the
phone, but those times are so few, and the times
that I have been awed by the generosity, frankness,
and -true kindness of my fellow librarians are
            intoxicatingly common.
It's this spirit of cooperation that I'd like
to see grow even more this year. We are
professionals in a field that is undergoing great
change, and we owe it to our patrons, ourselves,
and the profession of librarianship to be motivated
and open and enthusiastic. I think the best way to
do this is to be active in the Association. LLAGNY
and AALL are the catalysts that keep me excited
about the challenge of law librarianship because
they have never failed to provide a stimulating
forum for the exchange of ideas. There's truly not
an educational program or luncheon or seminar that
doesn't leave me with some piece of new information
or some new idea to think about.
