Pamela Melton, 2004-05 RIPS-SIS Chair
I felt the first real chill in the air this morning, right on cue. The State Fair opened
in Columbia last night and that means that fall is officially here. I love the State
Fair. I always have. When I was a little girl, growing up in rural South Carolina,
my parents would take us out of school early on a Friday to come to the fair. It
was magical. The smells of the food - popcorn and cotton candy, corndogs and
candy apples - and the sights - the giant Ferris wheel and the haunted houses -
could be found no where else. When the sun went down and the lights came on
along the Midway, I was enchanted. The livestock and produce exhibits even
interested me. My mother often entered paintings in the art competitions and
frequently won a prize. One year I found a huge jeweled star shaped brooch in
the sawdust. Treasure! It was hard for my parents to tear us away to go home
and we usually fell asleep in the car on the way.
When we lived in Virginia and our children were small, we used to take
them to the Prince William County Fair, which was the closest one to us. It had
some of the same innocent and unaffected quality of the fairs of my childhood.
The South Carolina State Fair has changed, of course, but it is still exciting. It is
still a place where the young and young-at-heart seek thrills. Farmers, craftsmen
and artists show off the fruits of their labors, take stock and begin to prepare for
another year. RIPS has shown off the fruits of its labors at the annual meeting
and is taking stock and gearing up for another year as well. I am excited by the
prospects.
The programs that we submitted for next year's annual meeting have
been evaluated and selected. You can read about them in this issue of the
newsletter. The mysterious Meeting Matrix has arrived on my desk and meeting
times must be chosen for San Antonio. We are hoping to engage and benefit
from the talents, enthusiasm, and expertise of our members to a greater extent
than ever before. RIPS has begun a new project, to gather library policies and
provide samples on our website, which we hope will be useful to our members.
Please consider contributing a policy from your library. Our website is continuing
to improve. If you haven't checked out Puron's page, you must! Finally, we have
joined with the Academic Law Librarians to market and develop the RIPS Legal
Research Teach-In Kit and the ALL-SIS Web Sourcebook as complementary
resources. Each SIS will keep its product distinct but combine content
recruitment and outreach efforts. Be on the lookout for an article in the December
issue of Spectrum with more details.
Oh, and Puron is having a blast in South Carolina. He's looking forward
to the waterfowl exhibits and the pig races at the Fair. As for me, I'm trying to get
up the nerve to sample a fried Oreo!
