Message From the Chair...Marc Silverman

I have always found Minneapolis to be an extremely
creative place, bustling with energy and a positive
outlook. I think a lot of this rubbed off on the
various programs and meetings that RIPS sponsored
at the annual meeting. An incredible amount of
work was accomplished, ideas were shared, future
goals were set, and we had a lot of fun.
Before the conference, one of the things I was most
concerned about was the revision of the RIPS
Strategic Plan. The original plan had run its course
and it was time to reevaluate our direction. A group
of dedicated RIPS officers met at 7:30 one morning
to begin the process. It's a tribute to past Chairs
Kristin Gerdy and Kelly Browne that we were able
to discard about two-thirds of the old plan due to
the goals having been met. The new strategic plan
appears on pp 8-9 of this newsletter. One issue that
we were hoping to resolve in Minneapolis is still in
limbo. The decision whether to make our newsletter
available electronically has been put off until a
report investigating this issue is released by the SIS
Council.
RIPS committees are working on a variety of old
and new projects. The Research Instruction Com-
mittee chaired by Sheri Lewis is working to add
those few features to the Core Legal Research
Competencies document that were recommended
by the AALL Publications Committee. The Program
Committee, headed up by D.R. Jones and Jessie
Cranford, has submitted several interesting propos-
als for next year's conference. Gary Hill and the
Patron Services Committee are working on drafting
an ADA policy for AALL. RIPS members Jean
Wenger and Gail Partin are currently working with

AALLs Access to Electronic Legal Information
Committee to establish standards for Internet legal
information sources. They will soon be asking for
help from the RIPS membership to test criteria
developed by the Committee in the evaluation of
specific websites. There is work waiting in the wings
for both the Nominations Committee and the
Public Relations Committee but before these com-
mittees can begin they need some additional mem-
bers. If you would like to volunteer a little of your
time to help in these areas please contact our volun-
teer coordinator Rachel Jones at jonesr@dsmo.com.
