Message From the Chair...Kelly Browne

The Annual Meeting in Philadelphia was yet
another successful meeting for RIPS. As usual, the
RIPS-sponsored programs-Greeting Them at the
Gateway: Exactly Who are our Lay Patrons, What
do They Expect from Us, and How Can We Help
Them?; A New Look to an Old Subject: Electronic
Resources in English Legal Research; Sexual
Harassment After Faragher and Burlington: Is Your
Library Practicing Safe Policy?; Developing Legal
Research Problems and Assignments that Work; A
New Legal Citation Manual: What will it Mean for
Law Librarians?; and Revealing the Gateway:
Service Marketing and Library Services-garnered

that it can be used as a standard of competence for

new lawyers. The Committee welcomes any others
who are interested in this project. The document
can be downloaded from AALLNet at:
http://www.aallnet.org/sis/ripssis/core.html.
2) Patron Services SPEC Kit.
Last year Marc Silverman and the Patron Services
Committee organized a Focus Group to identify
some ways that RIPS can better meet the needs of
our members involved in Circulation, Interlibrary
Loan, and other essential, non-reference patron
services. One idea that came from that group was
that RIPS produce a SPEC kit (like the Systems
and Procedures Exchange Center publications
from ARL) of circulation policies on certain topics
such as carrel assignments and fine appeal processes
and publish it on the RIPS web site. Despite the
