Letter from the Chair
Betsy McKenzie
San Francisco was a good meeting for the SIS! Three programs sponsored
by Readers Services were enjoyed by more than a thousand people, and got
good reviews. Florence Draper proposed The Art of Reference Service:
Accountability and Quality Control. This program had the highest attendance
of any program in San Francisco. Approximately 500 people came to hear
Barbara Robinson explain and illustrate her model of the reference interview,
and discussion of low and high tech methods to deal with repetitive questions.
Lee Ryan proposed Unauthorized Practice of Law: Can You Stop Worrying
and Help the Patron? The answer from a prosecuting attorney and the Virginia
Bar attorney in charge of UPL was YES! Darcy Kirk proposed Behind the
Scenes with the ADA: An Inside Account of How the Americans with Disabilities
Act Came Into Being and How It Can Affect Libraries Dealing with Disabled
Patrons.
The business meeting was well-attended (GREAT brownies, Joan!). The SIS
now has a Circulation Committee, which is planning to run a survey on
circulation policies through this newsletter. The Interlibrary Loan Committee,
chaired by Jan Goldsmith has a lot of new members. The Bibliographic
Instruction Committee, chaired by me, will be running articles throughout the
year. We will also be trying to coordinate with the Research Instruction Caucus,
which seems to have at least some overlap. I want to see the SIS diversify its
coverage to truly represent all of the Readers Services functions. This means I
will be seeking articles from members about photocopier reviews, card readers,
computers and printers, fax machines, furniture shopping, hours, seating,
circulation, and ILL, as well as reference and teaching. Anybody want to write
an article?
The chair of the Council of SIS's, Merle Slyhoff has said that one of her goals
for the year is to reduce the duplication amongst SIS's. There is already an ILL
committee in the Academic SIS, for instance, and our Bibliographic Instruction
Committee may duplicate the Research Instruction Caucus (I think ours came
first, however). This is another reason to diversify our coverage of public
services functions.
Coming up this year, the RS-SIS will be reviewing the by-laws and objectives
carefully. We will be looking to see that they are accurate and up-to-date. We
