Organizational Meeting Reader Services Special Interest Section
A meeting was held at the AALL convention in Rochester at 4:45 P.M.,
Tuesday, to form a Special Interest Section of those interested in
Reader Services. Barbara Snow from the University of Michigan Law
Library presided' at the meeting. Ms. Snow explained the need she
saw for a Reader Services SIS and the process for forming an SIS,
and then she opened the floor for discussion.
The first matter brought up wa-s a concern of some members of the Auto--
mation and Scientific Developments SIS that this SIS would overlap
in subject matter and result in duplication of effort. After dis-
cussion, the group- decided that the phrase ,audio-visual programs
should be eliminated from the wording of the petition. However,
audio-visual materials can remain a topic of interest to the Reader
Services SIS, as it is expected that SIS groups may often find areas
of common concern and will want to work together and share information.
The name of the SIS was the next topic. Public Services was pro-
posed. Other names proposed were User Services, Patron Services,
and Library Services. After discussion of all the implications
of each possible name, it was decided thatthe name be left Reader
Services.
Finally, the group discussed program possibilities for the next AALL
convention. The theme of the convention Toward More Access To Legal
Information naturally involves many Reader Services areas. It was
suggested that the new group could assist Mr. Peter Schanck of the
University of Detroit Law Library in the workshop he will lead entitled
Toward More Effective Public Assess To Legal Information. Ms.
Kathy Price, program chairperson for the San Francisco convention
explained the possibilities for putting on a program. It became
apparent that any program would have to be in conjunction with the
business meeting, Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Many
topics were proposed; and a preference vote showed measurement of
legal information services to be the favorite. However, at the
suggestion of Mr. Jeff Sulenski, of McGeorge Law Library, who will
be heading the work on program for this SIS for the next meeting,
no further action was taken on determining a program topic. Petitions
were passed around for signatures as well as sign-up sheets for
