I find maps fascinating. When I was young, I was enamored
by each one I could find, whether the battered Rand McNally
in our car or the mystical Middle-Earth sketch inside the
cover of a dog-eared fantasy novel. It was so grounding to
know where  I stood on the planet (or my fantasy world), but
at the same time feel so infinitesimally small and invisible.

Just a few decades later, maps would become more
prevalent than ever. These were of a slightly different
variety, vaguely familiar in appearance but functionally quite
different. Developed and pushed out by large tech
companies, these digital maps bend and twist reality with a
swipe of the finger. Filters and functions add additional
realism, carefully weaving together actual images of the
world from outer space, superimposing a line from the point I
am standing to my anticipated destination, and then literally
telling me where to go.
